Mobius strip lesson
You aren't really doing magic, you're doing math! Be sure to tape all the way across the edge, or the band will fall apart when you cut it. Have the students cut their Mobius bands in half. If they cut from the side, as a few younger students inevitably do, the trick will not work. If continued the line will meet the starting point and will be double the length of the original strip. So keep your cut close to the center so you don't accidentally end up with this.
The Mobius Strip
Students share tape and scissors. For second graders this is as far as I go. First try the lab and become familiar with the Mobius strip. Lead students through these activities: I could follow my line around the strip, or I could punch a hole in the strip. The teacher should also select 2 to 5 critical and creative thinking questions relevant to the lab that tie into the material being studied at the time.
