Canine anal sac disease
In advanced or severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Anal glands produce the pungent smelling secretion that allows the dog to mark his or her territory. If this condition recurs frequently, surgical removal of the sacs is indicated. This increases the size of his poop, which puts more pressure on the sacs to empty naturally. Many vets will recommend a high fiber diet to attempt to firm up the soft stools that commercial dog foods can create … but a raw diet that includes bone content will do it much more effectively. Infected sacs should be cleaned with antiseptic, followed by local and systemic antibiotic therapy. In rare cases, the nerve damage is permanent, and e, it can result in fecal incontinence or the inability to control bowel movements, with constant leakage of feces from your dog's anus.
Treatment and Prognosis for Anal Sac Disease in Dogs
Prolapse can be caused by a number of intestinal, anorectal, or urinary diseases. If this occurs, the veterinarian will attempt to insert a catheter into the bladder or remove the urine using a needle. Diagnosis is done by rectal examination to determine what organs and tissues are involved. If your dog repeatedly develops anal sac abscesses the sacs can be removed surgically. Canine Anal Glands and Sacs
Description: It is the most common disease of the anal region in dogs. Hypoallergenic diets may be useful as well. Additional tests may be needed if infection or a tumor is suspected. This is usually followed by partial closure of the anus with stitches for 5 to 7 days to prevent the prolapse from happening again. This is followed by an attempt to correct the hernia surgically.
