Partial penetration weld preps
The table gives the geometrical and material parameters associated with the joint. These common joints are made when two members with flat surfaces over lap each other. Visual inspection is the least expensive method but cannot detect many weld defects. Therefore the root pass is provided on the backing base metal. Rather than try to secure backing strips I felt it would be easier to weld with the land as a partial penetration joint. The line segments are always straight lines.

The associated table gives the acceptable parameters associated with each dimensional quantity. Because the bevel angle is small, the root opening must be increased far enough to allow for complete penetration through the joint. If I ultimately have to redo the weld joint I am willing to take responsibility for my mistakes and accept that, however I want to make sure I have a full understanding of what is required before I make a blanket statement that I need to redo a weld. Since the included angle of this joint is relatively large, then the root opening may be fit-up to be narrow without fear of the welding arc not being able to penetrate deep enough into the joint. In the fabrication of a compound bevel joint, the included angle at the bottom of the joint is made to be large say deg. The weld information is the same on both weld symbols. This type of connection joins the edges of two plate elements laid together has show in Figure 5.

I have often seen that engineers leave off the dimensions when they really intend to spec out a partial penetration weld. Fillet welds are very common and are used for a variety of connections. In the fabrication of a compound bevel joint, the included angle at the bottom of the joint is made to be large say deg. Because joint preparation now must be carried out from two sides of the plate rather than one, labor and cutting costs will double. Ultrasonic or X-ray techniques can detect hidden defects of welds but are very expensive.

Description: Although the two joint configurations mentioned above are quite common, there are instances where it would benefit the fabricator to utilize a joint design that features a bevel and a root face with no gap. Furthermore, root passes generally take more time to deposit than the fill and cap passes, which counters the savings generated from the reduction in weld metal attributed to double-sided groove welds. Typically a figure is given to define the different dimensional quantities. Here is an example: The appropriate symbol is shown on the right side of the figure.
